The Bag for Life project by the Lutaya Dream Resource Foundation (LDRF) is an initiative designed to empower adolescent girls who have dropped out of school, providing them with essential skills to improve their social acceptance and economic independence. The program is built on a model that offers these young women the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for holistic growth and development, fostering their personal and professional advancement.

At the core of this initiative is the goal to equip the girls with social, emotional, and entrepreneurial skills that enable them to seize employment opportunities or pursue self-employment. By creating local and international market linkages, the project ensures that participants have the tools to transform their newfound skills into sustainable livelihoods.

The desire to make a difference

The Bag for Life model provides a unique learning experience tailored to the development needs of each girl. It combines practical training in sewing and bag-making with continued education in reproductive health, financial literacy, decision-making, and character-building. In an environment that promotes creativity and enrichment, the girls are guided by mentors from various organizations who help nurture their independence, social and emotional growth, and sense of community.

This project empowers adolescent girls through: a) Learning to sew and craft bags. b) Creating local and international market opportunities for the bags, enabling participants to earn a living and inspire others in their community.

To date, instructors have taught and equipped many girls and women with sewing skills, and last year, several participants proudly earned certificates for their work.
